Beyoncé Launches Homecoming Scholarship For Students At Four HBCUS

Several reviews of Beyoncé’s Coachella (Beychella) performance have neglected to mention the fact that the entire 2-hour concert, from set design, to choreography, to song selection (see: The Black National Anthem), to costuming was a direct nod to Historically Black College and University culture, specifically homecoming.

For Black folks though, it was apparent from the moment the drumline leader hit the first note. From the second Beyoncé turned around dragging that drum major cane behind her, regaled in a black and metallic cape and crown, we knew what time it was and that our culture would be honored.

Not only is Beyoncé acknowledging the contributions, she’s also decided to give back to the institutions that created it.

In a bulletin posted on her website, her company, Parkwood Entertainment, announced that she was launching the Homecoming Scholars Award Program through her Beygood Initiative. The program will award students from Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune Cookman Universities with a scholarship.

The bulletin said that the performance was the impetus for her second scholarship program after last year’s Formation Scholars Award Program in celebration of the one-year anniversary of LEMONADE.
