‘My black is flawless ’: The South Sudanese model taking Instagram by storm

Nyakim, a 24-year-old South Sudanese model, is reminding people that dark skin is something to celebrate.

An Uber driver once asked model Nyakim Gatwech if she’d bleach her skin for £10,000.

To which she laughed and responded: ‘Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin?’

Posting her photoshoots on Instagram, her empowering messages about her deeply-pigmented skin are inspiring people from around the world.

From reminding black girls that ‘you are beautiful just different and unique’, and that everyone ‘should be proud of your heritage regardless of how light or dark your skin is’.

From bikini shots in front of striking desert landscapes to rocking bohemian tie die dresses by brick walls, Nyakim gets her point across without having to write a single word.

‘That look you give them when they try to tell you that you are pretty for black girl… like please,’ she writes in another post.

It is the hardest stage of becoming a black butterfly. You will encounter many hardships only to come out stronger and better than what you went in. At this stage, you are finding out who you truly are and how to love yourself.
