Black Girl Magic: Ava DuVernay Wins Big At The Creative Arts Emmys

According to The Fader, the highly discussed doc, which has been dubbed necessary viewing by many, was nominated for eight awards and won four in the categories of Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Writing for Nonfiction Programs, Outstanding Documentary Design, and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for “The Letter to the Free,” performed by Common, Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins.

Always a poised and thoughtful orator, DuVernay used her time while accepting her multiple awards to shed light on the criminal justice and prison system in America, urging the media to use their respective platforms to bring attention to the issues that matter.

“When all kinds of people are feeling aggressively demoralized and devalued, people of justice and dignity need to stand up and make our voices heard,” she said. “Our voices are stronger than those that try to silence us.”

She also took to Instagram to extend her “thank yous” to a few more people while showing off her trophies:
