“Black Girl Magic” Editor Jamila Woods and Poet Safia Elhillo on Putting a Spotlight on Black Women

“This anthology will invite you to do some work, for people that aren’t Black women, but that’s a good thing.”

In 2013, CaShawn Thompson popularized #blackgirlmagic. Five years later, it is more than a hashtag, it is a movement. Zora Neale Hurston described Black women to be “the mule of the world” in Their Eyes Were Watching God, because of the intersection between our identities, leading us to carry the load that nobody wants to. We are the foundation of the world.

Vocalist and poet Jamila Woods, fiction writer Idrissa Simmonds, and author Mahogany L. Browne have come together to edit Black Girl Magic, an anthology celebrating the works of Black women from all corners of the diaspora. It’s the second in the Break Beat Poets series, and features a number of Black girl poets exploring themes of beauty, unapologetic blackness, intersectionality, self-definition, and more.
