Ideas sought for new statue honoring African-American woman at site of controversial Stephen Foster memorial

Three community forums over the next couple weeks will center on a replacement for the controversial Stephen Foster statue in North Oakland, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s office said.

Last month, the administration announced that a sculpture recognizing an African-American woman will appear at the site of the long-controversial Foster memorial. The city Task Force on Women in Public Art is hosting several public forums to “engage and collect more feedback in selecting” an honoree, the mayor’s office said in a statement.

Input at the forums will inform a request for proposals for the new artwork, according to the city. Sessions are set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nazarene Baptist Church, 7053 Hamilton Ave., Homewood South; for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 1 at the Sheraden Healthy Active Living Center, 720 Sherwood …
