“Mommy… Look! My Hair Is Like Demetria’s From TV!” Traffic Reporter Meets Her Tiniest Fan On Air

Coming off of last week’s viral photo of a teacher who wore the same hairstyle as her 4-year-old student to prove she loved her hair is another feel good story about representation for Black girls.

We’ve been riding for Demetria Obilor, the Dallas reporter dubbed “traffic bae,” ever since a viewer tried to shame her for her figure last fall. And today she became an even bigger champion in our eyes when she invited her youngest fan on the show after receiving a tweet from her mom about the 4-year-old loving to watch her on TV because she looks like her.

Tiffny Jones tweeted the message above on Monday, saying her daughter saw the traffic reporter on air that day and proclaimed, “Mommy….look, my hair is like Demetria’s from TV.” And today Karsyn got to meet Demetria when she brought her on Channel 8 to talk about her hair and learn about working at a news station.

What Does It Mean To Be “Black Butterfly Beautiful”

The image of the butterfly has come to define the many expressions of the feminine black consciousness and for a good reason. The butterfly is the perfect articulation of the exquisite beauty of nature. Whether tiny or large, brightly colored or more subdued, the butterfly’s allure is undeniable. Each one displays its own unique patterns and hues, and no one species outshines any other.

Similarly, there is no one ideal image of a black woman -- each is gorgeous in her right. All African-Americans share a glorious history of struggle and perseverance that has funneled into the modern black renaissance. And, like the graceful butterfly, the awakened black woman exemplifies the dazzling beauty of that cultural evolution.
