Starr’s Family Has Been Cast for The Hate U Give Movie!

Flashback just a couple of months: THE HATE U GIVE, the breathtaking, addicting, too-relevant YA debut from Angie Thomas, finally hit shelves after months of anticipation. We could not put it down. And you know what? It seemed like our dreams came true when we found out soon after that it was being optioned for a movie! A chance to see Starr on the big screen? SIGN. US. UP.

Of course, that also meant more waiting. So here we are, a few months later, and guess what?! WE FINALLY HAVE NEWS. The Carter family has been CAST. We’re doing a whole lot of freaking out over here, so come join in and celebrate this #flawless family with us!!

Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter

Maybe you first saw Amandla as Rue in The Hunger Games, or maybe it was her role as Maddy in Everything, Everything. Maybe you just know her as that amazing voice speaking out about social justice in magazines and on the web. Maybe you’ve never heard of her before! No matter which category you fit into, you can trust us when we say that Amandla will take on this role PERFECTLY.

If you haven’t read THE HATE U GIVE yet, or if it’s just been a while, Starr is the main character. She moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the prep school she attends. The balance between them shatters when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Starr is such a powerful role model and we cannot wait to see Amandla portray her!

Regina Hall as Lisa Carter

Coming right off her powerhouse performance in the hilarious Girls Trip, Regina Hall is taking on the YA world as Starr’s mom! Anyone who’s read THE HATE U GIVE knows how precious the relationship is between Lisa and Starr, and how Lisa helps Starr cope after witnessing the murder. Lisa manages to perfectly balance all the aspects of her family’s life but struggles with wanting to move away to keep them all safe, and we could not have cast a better actress if we tried!

Russell Hornsby as Big Mav

We. love. Big. Mav. And we would trust so few actors to get our fav YA dad right, but Russell is definitely one of them. In the book, Starr’s father is a former gang member who genuinely wants to make their neighborhood a better place. He’s super kind, thoughtful, and intelligent, but he’s also not someone you want to …
