CurlFest 2017’s Best Hair Looks
Saturday, July 15th a mass of people with heads full of kinks, coils, and curls descended upon Prostpect Park for the fourth annual CurlFest, a celebration of natural hair — and an opportunity for naturalistas to grab a ton of product to keep their manes looking extra fleeky. Allure was on the scene to take in all the amazing hairstyles, and chat with people about what CurlFest means to them, their hair journeys, and how they care for their coifs. Read on to see all the gorgeous hair we spied at the big event.
“Yesterday, this lovely lady Ashley Crews (@hairventionz) came up here and she did my hair. I have cornrows with bantu knots, and crochet hair in the back real big, wide and fun. What I love most about my hair is that it’s big and it’s unpredictable, just like my personality. I get all the stares!”
“My hair has grown on me. I didn’t always like it. It’s taken a long time, and it wasn’t until I became and adult and wanted to embrace myself, embrace my identity, and really take pride in who I am that I started to like my hair. I like the fact that it’s a manifestation of myself on the inside. That change, that consciousness came with wanting to be authentic and not feel like I have to fit into any boxes, or live up to anybody’s expectations besides those that I carry for myself.”
“I just wanted to be around the community. All these beautiful melanated people, all these afros and different hairstyles. It’s just a good time.”
Kennedy: “I love that my hair is blue and pink.”
Candice: “[CurlFest] just brings us all together to celebrate each other. I don’t think there’s another movement like that now, so it’s exactly what we need at this time.”
Chelseann: We’re hair models for Ancestral Strands. We’re bringing back awareness of natural hair and bringing back African traditions through braiding and braid styles.
