Only One Black Woman Exec Remains Among Fortune 500 Companies

Former Walgreens CEO Rosalind Brewer, who stepped down this week, was one of just two Black women CEOs among leading companies

In 2023, there were just two Black women leading Fortune 500 companies. After Friday’s announcement that Walgreens CEO Rosalind Brewer was unexpectedly stepping down, only one remains. 

Brewer said that she and Walgreens “mutually agreed” upon her departure, The Messenger previously reported, though no reason for the move was given. Brewer’s exit makes Thasunda Brown Duckett of investment company TIAA the last remaining Black woman among Fortune 500 executives, according to Fortune’s 2023 list.

Brewer’s departure means there are now no Black women leading S&P 500 companies, USA Today reported.
