The Season Two Premiere of OWN’s Queen Sugar Was Its Highest-Rated Episode Ever

OWN’s critically acclaimed series Queen Sugar returned for its second season in a two-night premiere that aired on June 20 and 21. It was the highest-rated episode in series history across key women and adult demos, with a 2.09 rating for women 25-54 and 2.3 million total viewers. The premiere episode was Tuesday night’s No.2  cable telecast for women and was No.1 in the time period across all cable for women.

In addition, the premieres of Queen Sugar and OWN’s Tyler Perry series, The Haves and the Have Nots, were the No. 1 and 2 most social cable series episodes, respectively, on June 20.

Based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, Queen Sugar, created by famed filmmaker Ava DuVernay, follows the estranged Bordelon siblings as they deal with the aftermath of their father’s death. The series features Dawn-Lyen Gardner as Charley Bordelon-West, the savvy wife and manager of a professional basketball star; Rutina Wesley as Nova Bordelon, a worldly wise journalist and Black Lives Matter activist; and Kofi Siriboe as Ralph Angel Bordelon, a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption.

During this season, the siblings struggle to move forward in their lives as they strive to honor the legacy of their father and the sugar cane farm
