Therapy For Black Girls is the website connecting WOC with therapists just like them
In the UK, people from black and minority ethnic groups are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health problems and get a poorer outcome from treatment. That might be down to a number of issues, but it mostly stems from things like poverty and racism. Over in the states, Afro Americans are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress, with those living below the poverty line being three times more likely to suffer from a mental health issue than others. And what’s even more disturbing is that Black American teenagers are more likely to attempt suicide than any other group. And yet there are very few resources targetting the community. Less still for young women. Which is why one licensed psychologist has set up a platform designed specifically to help black girls and women find black therapists to whom they can relate. Therapy for Black Girls is the brainchild of Dr Joy Harden Bradford, and it’s an online space dedicated to encouraging the mental wellness of Black women and girls.
‘So often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevent Black women from taking the step of seeing a therapist,’ says Dr Joy. ‘I developed the space to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant.’ Dr Joy’s own specialities include working with Blck women in couples counselling and on an individual basis. ‘My primary areas of interest include break up and divorce recovery, depression, work-life balance, relationship skills, and self-esteem improvement.
