Smith, first Black woman hired as NFL coach, to speak at ECSU’s 177th commencement

The first African American woman to serve as a coach in the National Football League will be the speaker at Elizabeth City State University’s 177th commencement next weekend.

Collette V. Smith, who in 2017 also became the first female coach in New York Jets history, will address graduates and guests at the Saturday, Dec. 9, ceremony that gets underway at 9 a.m. in ECSU’s R.L. Vaughan Center.

According to ECSU, Smith is also the founder, president, and chief executive officer of “Believe N You, Inc.,” an organization that offers encouragement and motivational speaking to schools and corporations throughout New York.
